In any case, every internship should accomplish health & safety regulations and offer valuable educational experience.

When are the interns not receiving the National Minimum Wage?

Educational study internships – Curricular internships

If the intern is a student required to do an internship up to 12 months as part of their education in the UK or an university from abroad,they you are not entitled to get the National Minimum Wage, therefore, companies are not obliged to pay an specific amount as compensation for the placement.

School experience placmeents

School students who are making a placement as part of a lower education, are not entitled neither to the national minimum wage.

Work shadowing and volunteering

If a candidate is just doing work shadowing or volunteering, they are not entitled to the National Minimum Wage.

When are the interns receiving the National Minimum Wage?

In any other case, students doing an internship should be payed at least the National Minimum Wage, even being considered interns.

COMPENSATION (not NMW)

In Internships UK we believe that it is key to offer a great educational experiences but also to offer a general quality stay for candidates who are making a placement in a company. We are recruiting qualified students and though they may lack of much experience, we strongly suggest companies to offer some compensation for them during their placements, despite being entitled or not to the NMW.

DURATION

An internship can last from 2 weeks from really specific tasks up to 6 or 12 months, depending on the educational program, the goals of the student and the agreement between both parties. The most common duration in the UK is 12 months but it is possible to find shorter options.
